Spencer businesses giving away free turkeys for Christmas
SPENCER — Looking for a way to spread some holiday cheer, a group of Spencer businesses are giving away free turkeys for Christmas.
Food Lion donated 20 turkeys, one for each business participating in the giveaway.
No purchase is necessary. Simply go to any, or all, of the businesses and fill out a free raffle ticket. The same person can enter the giveaway once a day at each business.
Each merchant will draw a winner, and winners will be announced at 3 p.m. Dec. 21 in Park Plaza at B&P Antiques and Collectibles.
Winners can claim their turkey at that time, but it is not necessary to be present to win. Winners who are not present will be notified.

CLEVELAND — The Subway restaurant in Cleveland donated 20 percent of proceeds Friday to benefit the family of Marcus Kauffman, who was shot in the head Dec. 2 after interrupting a robbery at his western Rowan County home.
The line at the restaurant was out the door all day, said Cybil Jones, wife of franchise owner and Spencer Alderman Kevin Jones.
“We’ve had people drive two hours today just to eat at our Subway to support this family,” she said. “It’s been great.”
SALISBURY — The deadline is 5 p.m. Tuesday to register for the Rowan County Chamber of Commerce’s Power in Partnership breakfast featuring Secretary of Commerce Sharon Decker.
Decker will speak at 7:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Oaks, 728 Klumac Road. She was appointed by Gov. Pat McCrory and has more than 30 years of experience in business and commerce.
After graduating summa cum laude from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Decker spent more than 17 years with Duke Power Company. She founded the Lynnwood Foundation, began the William States Lee Leadership Institute, served as president of the Doncaster division of Tanner Companies and was CEO and creator of the Tapestry Group nonprofit organization.
She is a lay pastor in the Presbyterian Church and has a master of divinity degree.
The cost of the breakfast is $12 for members and $20 for non-members, which includes breakfast and the program.

SALISBURY — Employees at Magna Composites played Santa for the families of 40 needy children at a local elementary school.
The workers joined together to collect more than 250 gifts through the company’s Angel Tree program. The gifts, which ranged from small toys to bicycles, will go to the students at Cleveland Elementary School and their families.
SALISBURY — Trinity Oaks is hosting an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday.
Guests can board the trolley sponsored by F&M Bank and tour the cottage community and campus. Cider and Christmas snacks will be available, and Santa will make an appearance. Trinity Oaks is located at 728 Klumac Road.
CHINA GROVE — Dallene “Dale” Wagner Yontz has joined Jones Property Management & Realty Inc. in China Grove.
Yontz has more than 25 years of real estate experience, working with buyers and sellers in Rowan, Cabarrus and surrounding counties. As a longtime member of the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Realtors, she has served on the board of directors and as secretary.
“Dale is a perfect fit for our company because she is totally driven by service to her customers and community,” President Bruce D. Jones said.
Jones joined his wife Rebecca Jones in the real estate company after a 33-year banking career to help build a major real estate company in Rowan County, he said. The firm specializes in property management for multi-family, residential, commercial and homeowners associations.
The company’s property management business has doubled in the past year with more than 400 units under management, Jones said, and the company has represented buyers in the purchase of commercial real estate totaling $5 million during the past three months.
“With the addition of Dale, we are building on our current sales team allowing the company to continue to expand its sales growth and property management business,” Jones said.
Yontz belongs to the National Harley Owners Group and is married to Jeff Yontz. They have two daughters and two granddaughters.

SPENCER — A vintage clothing shop has opened in Spencer with clothes, boots, evening gowns, suits and more from decades past.
Yolanda Wells opened Rags 2 Riches Vintage Boutique at 506 S. Salisbury Ave. Wells, originally from Washington, D.C., said she chose the location in downtown Spencer near the Green Goat Gallery and Pinocchio’s restaurant because of the “hometown feel.”
“It has always been my passion and dream to have my own boutique,” she said. “I wanted to offer women a zen-ful experience.”
Wells returns to Washington once a month to stock up on inventory at estate sales and auctions.
“I want to keep it different,” she said.
The boutique sells accessories like jewelry and handbags, as well. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
